News Corp CEO: “We are going to define what the smartphone is”

Over a third (36%) of News Corp Australia’s audience views content via a smartphone. This is expected to reach 50% in 2014. Small wonder then that Robert Thomon, CEO, News Corp has told colleagues: “We are going to help define what the smartphone is.”

Mobile phones are a key point of access for social media, and, in turn, for sharing news. Social media users pass on pieces of information as stories develop helping to give stories shape. But we’re a fickle lot. Our sentiment surrounding some stories changes over time. And, audiences for news differs from social platform to platform.

The Pew Research Center’s Journalism Project, in collaboration with the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, has drilled down into how news is functioning in the social media space. New survey data released here find that half (50%) of social network users share or repost news stories, images or videos while nearly as many (46%) discuss news issues or events on social network sites.
